1. Introduction

Chinese Kung Fu has a very long history and rich contents with a wealth of different schools. In them the Wudang Martial Arts features the uniqueness in adhering to the principle of overcoming the hard with the soft. In ancient Taoism book Tao Te Ching carries the following messages:

Beneath heaven nothing is more soft and yielding than water.
Yet for attacking the solid and strong,
Nothing can take its place.
Therefore the soft can overcome the hard,
The weak can overwhelm the strong,
Under heaven everyone knows this,
Yet no one puts it into practice.

Wudang Kung Fu is well known for its unfathomed fighting theory, special internal strength training approaches and handling skills when facing very unfavorable circumstances. The routine form sets and the weapon manipulation system often convey to people the intangible force which in many cases scare the enemy a lots before the start of fight. Thus Wudang Kung Fu enjoys an unparalleled position in Kung Fu circle in China's long history.

Wudang Taoist Kung Fu Academy (WTKFA) now sponsors special program with which practitioners or foreign tourists can stay in one of Wudang Taoist temple for a period to experience Taoist living style and talk about Wudang Kung Fu practice with Taoist Kung Fu masters and practitioners. This is a special program offerred to foreign Kung Fu practitioners and tourists and the photo left is the famous Wudang temple called Grind-Steel-Cudge-To-Needle Temple. There is a popular story with this temple and here we introduce below:

It is heard that JingLe prince once came to Mount Wudang to practice inner alchemy after conquering so many difficulties and experiencing unexpected hardship. Yet, when he found that the progress he gained was so little after one year of unswerving efforts he began to regret something and wandered around and planned to return to JingLe State and stop the practice. When he came to a mountain range he noticed an old woman was holding a very coarse steel cudge and grinded it on a stone. He felt curious and came near to ask the old woman:
"Your old respectable, what is the porpose for your grinding so thick steel cudge now you are so old?"
"I am now making a silk-thread needle," replied the old woman.
"What? How many months and how many years you can make needle with so big stell cudge? Surprised the JingLe Prince.
"So thick and corse as it is, yet grind it one time it will decease a little. When we make enough efforts the steel cudge is sure to be grinded to a tiny needle."

The JingLe prince seemed to apprehend something upon lessioning such saying. Yet, when he raised his head and watched again he suddenly found the old woman disappeared completely. JingLe prince understood in an instant that someone was offering advice and direction to him, telling only the persistence in the practice can bring deserving fruit. So, he came back to Mysterious Mist Palace again and continued with his practice every day. 41 years later he succeeded with the inner alchemy practice and was bestowed with the title of TaiYee immortal, later called ZhenWu Greatness.

5. Study Traditional Wudang Hard-natured Kung Fu (Ying Gong) with Master Yhuan in Wudang Town School
Master Yhan got apprenticed to Grand master Zhong Yunlong when he was as young as 9 years old. After more then 20 years of diligent study under master Zhong, Yhuan gradually developed his own style in understanding and applying Wudang Kung Fu. Besides the mastery of almost all traditional Wudang Kung Fu formsets (Ba Gua Chang, Ising-I, Tai Chi Chuan, Xuan Wu Chuan, Taking-Tiger-captive boxing, Ba Chi Chuan, etc.) he becomes especially eminent in mastering the hard-natured arts such as iron T-shirt, iron arms, iron head, iron legs, iron palm, etc. The following introduces the basics of Iron T-shirt and Iron Palm:

5-1: Iron T Shirt
The Kung Fu art of Steel Clothing is a hard-nature qigong practice. It is also nicknamed as Eagle-Claw Steel Clothing, Golden Bucket Kung Fu or None-Injury-By-Spear-And-Sword Kung Fu. It has been a long time dream of effectively abstaining from injury by spear, sword, gun and other sharp weapons widely used in ancient Chinese battle field or self-defense circumstances. And such Kung Fu form came into being many centuries ago perfectly satisfying warriors' practical needs and thus gaining a very mysterious halo around it. Yet, if some people boast of its enormous power to such extent that it even can avoid the bullet we think such persons are just telling a lie. For a persistent practitioner who can have the chance to receive proper systematic teaching of the whole set by a competent master he/she can effectively withstand almost all kinds of strikes such as kicks, punch, hits, piercing, etc. by hands, feet, spear, stick, etc. as same as like putting on a steel clothing. Furthermore, with such Kung Fu arts practitioners can crush all invasions in an instant and impose enormous overwhelming power on all enemies with its intangible force. Sometimes, it is widely used for Kung Fu demonstration. For instance:

  1. Bounce stone monument into pieces with head
  2. Hammer the brick stack uploaded upon the head and pounce them into pieces
  3. Bear hits imposed by any people
  4. Cut stone block into half with palm.

Besides its application in martial arts arena, Steel Clothing Kung Fu is an invaluable gem in health preservation and disease treatment and prevention. Practicing it for long, practitioners can harmonize the flowing of Qi and blood, open up channels and course vessels, balance Yin and Yang in a whole and nourish the healthy Yang Qi, So, patients can use it to enrich and empower his defense aspects gradually and later such reenforcement can leads to the final overwhelming over the pathogenic existence, resulting in a final cure of diseases as things develop. The abundance of Yang Qi and blood can ensure the energetic daily activities of practitioners and guarantee them free of most kinds of invasion of pathogen.

5-2. Iron Palm
The iron palm method is the hand conditioning regimen. Iron palm is the essence of the gung fu of legend, not the watered down version that so many modern practitioners bring to fights, only to be crushed. It trains the palm heart, or the flat of the palm. In manp people's opinion, the flat palm slap is the trademark strike of fighting gung fu

There is no mistaking an iron palm slap for boxing, karate, or mindless street brawling. As for its application in tameshiwari, the iron palm is unrivaled when it comes to breaking solid objects. Though you might be inclined to think otherwise, it is much easier to break a brick with the iron palm than it is with a punch, chop, hammerfist, or palm heel strike. Iron palm is also noted for its capability of breaking the bottom brick in a stack without spacers. Such a practice is known as selective breaking.

Ku Yu Cheong, one of the most famous masters of iron palm, reportedly could break bricks selectively in a stack. Iron palm falls short only when it comes to breaking flexible objects (wood, baseball bats) and objects with spacers. Some explain it to people with this example- the palm slap can move anything it strikes one half an inch. Since cement cannot flex, it breaks. If the object, such as wood, can flex farther than that, it will not break. This is only an exaggerated example, and only an example of personal theory at that. As for spacers, the palm has difficulty sending energy through "hollow" area.

There are many variations of the iron palm conditioning process and each usually has a set amount of time for the initial phase. During first phase, training must be done daily. After that, maintenance training varies. The first phase ranges anywhere from one month to three years or more. There are also advanced levels of the iron palm as well as internal and external conditioning.

To be honest, that 100 days is not enough time to produce an invincible palm, but it will create a hand that is dangerous enough for combat, as well as allow you to break red bricks. This regimen conditions the entire hand.

Both iron T-shirt and iron palm require the internal and external Chinese herbal medicine for assistance. Otherwise, it is easy to cause injury and damage to the bone, sinew, flesh, blood circulation. So, no herbal remedy in assistance no guarantee for the healthy training with these kung fu.

To study under master Yhuan, the monthly cost is Euro 544, including food, accommodation and food. For long time study, cost can be lowered accordingly. For more information please contact wudang@damo-qigong.net
